The original Raglan Public School bell is still used today.
The village of Raglan was named after Lord Raglan, one of the British commanders in the Crimean War. By 1866 Raglan was the centre of an expanding agricultural district.
On the request by local citizens, a Provisional School was established with Miss Elizabeth Lawson as teacher in December 1870 with an enrolment of eighteen students. Enrolments had increased to twenty-six by 1872.
With the extension of the State railway line to Raglan in March 1873, a much higher school population was inevitable with the influx of construction workers. The Provisional School Local Committee proceeded to erect a timber and iron-roofed building to accommodate eighty students.
By 1874, a Public School was established and enrolments peaked at eighty-six students with an average weekly attendance of fifty-three students.
In 1889, a brick building was erected and as soon as the premises were occupied by the forty students enrolled, the old building was sold.
By 1911, enrolments had declined to just nine students and the Minister for Public Instruction decided to close the school with the remaining students being sent to Kelso Public School as the railway timetable suited school hours. Fortunately, the railway timetable changed and with potential enrolments increasing the school was re-opened in 1913.
School enrolments remained steady with an upsurge during the Second World War when workers associated with the local aerodrome brought their families with them.
In April 1989, our students move to our current school site and the official opening was held on May 30th 1990. Official guests included Dr Terry Metherell, the Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, Mr Berry, the State Member for Bathurst and Mr Simmons the Federal Member for Calare. The principal was Mr Vic Arthur and our school captains were Scott Hellyer and Shelly Carter.
